Myths

Myth: Sugar is the only cause of cavities

Parents wave the sugar warning like a talisman. But teeth can decay in a house with no sweets at all.

Why people believe it

Sugar is the villain we can see. It's easy to blame the visible chocolate and miss the invisible chemistry happening after every meal.

The truth

Cavities are caused by bacteria in the mouth and acidic foods, not just sugar. Bacteria feed on carbohydrates of many kinds and produce acid that dissolves enamel. Acidic drinks do damage of their own, sugar or not.

What to do instead

Think beyond the sugar tin. Brush twice daily, floss, rinse after acidic food and drink, and keep regular check-ups so early decay is caught before it hurts.
